THE
KOMA PREMIUM SURFACE
There
are a number of different types of PVC trim board available on the market today.
KOMA is a global producer of PVC foam board. KOMA is a world leader in
the technology of the two leading manufacturing processes for the manufacturing
of PVC trimboard. KOMA chose to make their trimboard out of the CELUKA process
produces a denser surface. By making the surface more dense it is harder and
less likely to scratch and show minor surface dents and imperfections.
The CELUKA manufacturing process also allows KOMA to add a propriety
surface finish that gives the KOMA trimboard a far superior surface to accept
latex paint if the user so desires. This
surface also allows for the acceptance of paint without the need for a primer
being applied. KOMA does not
require paint, but should you desire to paint it, KOMA felt that
providing a premium surface for paint adhesion was best.
STORAGE
AND HANDLING
When
storing KOMA trim products lay them on a level and flat surface. If stored on
uneven surfaces KOMA may conform to the surface on which it is stored.
ü
KOMA is a premium trim product; it should
be handled with care to avoid damage.
ü
KOMA is shipped in a protective covering.
Try to keep KOMA covered and free of dirt and debris at jobsite. If KOMA gets
dirty, clean after installation. Products like soft scrub
with a nylon brush do an excellent job restoring KOMA to its original
manufactured state.
CUTTING
ü
KOMA products can be cut using all types
of saws, (Circular, Band, Saber, Table, Panel or Gang Rip)
ü
Good quality carbide tipped blades work
best. Do not use fine tooth metal cutting blades.
DRILLING
ü
Use standard wood drills to drill KOMA
products. .
ü
When drilling KOMA products be careful to
avoid frictional heat build-up.
ü
Drills ground for rigid PVC are not
recommended for KOMA.
ROUTING
ü
Use standard router bits when routing KOMA
products.
ü
KOMA routs best with carbide tipped router
bits.
ü
KOMA products will have a crisp, clean
edge after routing.
FASTENING
ü
Any woodworking fastener will work with
KOMA products.
ü
When you want KOMA trimboard to adhere to
each other, use PVC cement.
ü
KOMA recommends a high quality fastener
such as stainless steel or hot dipped galvanized.
ü
KOMA trim products work well with nail
guns
ü
KOMA recommends using finishing nails.
ü
KOMA recommends avoiding fine threaded
wood screws and ring shank fasteners.
ü
KOMA does not require pre-drilling
unless a large fastener is used or product is installed in low temperatures.
PAINTING
ü
KOMA products do not require paint for
protection, but may be painted to achieve a custom color.
ü
KOMA has a special proprietary surface
that allows it to hold paint much better than all competitive PVC trim product.
ü
To paint KOMA products, use standard
exterior or interior latex paint.
ü
All you have to do is clean the surface
and paint
ü
No special surface preparations are
required prior to painting.
ü
Avoid painting KOMA surfaces dark
colors (do not exceed # 65 on hue scale) in areas of direct sunlight.
ü
Use wood filler or latex caulk for
plugging nail holes.
GLUING
ü
Standard PVC cements, or cellular PVC
cements, provide a strong KOMA to KOMA bond.
ü
For best results, glue all KOMA joints to
prevent joint separation.
ü
The KOMA glue joint should be secured long
enough to allow adequate bonding time.
ü
When bonding KOMA to other surfaces, check
with the adhesives label to see if it’s use is good for your purpose.
REPAIRING DAMAGED SURFACE
Auto
body filler works well for large damaged areas.
MOLDING/MILLING
ü
KOMA products can be molded/milled using
standard woodworking equipment.
ü
KOMA products do not absorb moisture. KOMA products can be installed above or
below grade.
EXPANSION & CONTRACTION
ü
KOMA trimboards are PVC and will expand
and contract with changes in temperature.
ü
KOMA trimboard fastened along its entire
length will minimize expansion and contraction.
ü
When installing KOMA trimboard allow
3/16” space per 18 foot of KOMA trimboard for expansion and contraction.
Joints between pieces of KOMA should be glued to eliminate joint separation. See
“Gluing” section above.
ü
When gaps are glued on a long run of KOMA,
allow expansion and contraction space at ends of the run.
ü
A high quality polyurethane sealant is
recommended for joints.
SPANNING
KOMA
products are not to be used in load
bearing applications. Do not exceed
16” span. When applying edge and center bead, fasteners should be used every
16”.
